Q. Who was Robert W. Troch III, and why was Kaiju Kastle founded?
A. Robert W. Troch III was an award-winning diorama builder and mentor who spent decades helping fellow enthusiasts develop their skills and bringing people together at conventions. He nicknamed his upstate workshop “Kaiju Kastle,” reflecting his belief that everyone should have a place of their own.

Learning, Programs and Community
Q. Do I need artistic talent or previous experience to enjoy model building?
A. Absolutely not. You don't need to consider yourself an artist to enjoy building models. Patience, curiosity, and a willingness to experiment can take you a long way.
At Kaiju Kastle, we want people to feel encouraged to try, learn from others, and develop their own approach to the craft. As Robert said, “the goal isn't about perfection. It’s about the process.” It's about discovering what you can create and finding joy in making it your own.
Q. Does Kaiju Kastle offer learning opportunities?
A. Kaiju Kastle develops programs that make model building more accessible and introduce newcomers to the hobby. These have included Kaiju University at G-Fest, an introductory kaiju modeling experience, and events that bring enthusiasts together. Depending on the program, you may have an opportunity to try the craft, learn new skills, and connect with other builders.
Availability, registration requirements, included materials, and fees vary by program. Check our website and event announcements for current offerings and details.
Q. Who can participate in Kaiju Kastle's programs? Do I need to bring my own supplies?
A. We welcome people who share an interest in kaiju and related genres, such as horror and science fiction, including those who are just beginning to explore model building. Our programs are designed to encourage participation, learning, and connections among enthusiasts.
Age requirements, available spaces, supplies, fees, and other participation details depend on the specific program. Some offerings may include a kit, tools, paint supplies, or other materials, while others may have different requirements. Please read the information provided for each event before registering.
Q, What is the “WOW!” Awards?
A. After Robert’s passing, Kaiju Modeler renamed its awards the “WOW!” Awards in his honor.
Presented at WonderFest and G-Fest, the awards recognize entries that demonstrate creativity and push boundaries in Kaiju model-building and other kit themes. A special recognition is also presented in the Young Adults category.
The name was inspired by Robert’s love of walking through the contest rooms. Every once in a while, he would stop in front of an entry and simply say, “Wow!” He was especially drawn to models and dioramas that stretched the imagination and used everything but the kitchen sink to bring an idea to life — regardless of scale, medium or theme.
There is no additional entry fee for the WOW! Awards. All entries submitted to the convention contests are automatically eligible.
We hope to be “wowed” many times each year, just as Robert was.
